THE SPECIAL CASE OF MARIJUANA
Under marijuana, I treat all tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) containing drugs, which include marijuana (the buds of the cannabis indica plant), hashish (the pollen), hashish oil (compressed extract) and synthetic THC. Marijuana is, in some regard, a special case similar to that of the already covered ecstasy. Most drugs described here can be relatively easily allocated to a single chakra. Ecstasy, marijuana and ketamine cannot. Marijuana has a mild positive effect on the throat chakra, while having a mild negative effect on the heart and power chakra. The above-described plant hallucinogens do not affect the heart and navel chakra at all.
Marijuanaâs positive effect on the throat chakra consists of a modified perception of space and time. Marijuana is often consumed by artists. The extreme sensitivity to rhythm in eastern- and Reggae music is due to Marijuana drawing time units long, and percussionists and drummers, or for example, Indian table players, becoming much more sensitive to intricacies of rhythms. Similarly, Middle Eastern geometrical sacred paintings are clearly influenced by an increased sensitivity to space produced by the activation of the throat chakra.
At the same time marijuana mildly impedes the heart chakra, which if smoked daily and especially in large quantities, impedes the processing of emotions and eventually contributes to their bottling up. Marijuana-addicts often surprise through their emotional immaturity, even if at the same time they may be intellectually well endowed. There are always exceptions to the rule, and one may as well be the Rastafarian leader Bob Marley (with the Rastafarian religion likely to play a role here). But as we see with all drugs, a few exceptions who, through strong, already existing tendencies in their personality, overcome the tendency of a particular drug, do not disprove the general assessment of that drug. Marijuana also mildly impedes the navel chakra. Generally, marijuana-smoking communities (such as the hippies), are marginalized and disempowered, as marijuana mellows oneâs drive to leadership, domination and success. This, however, does not have to be only a negative thing, as we will explore later on.
In India, charas (a form of hashish), used to be widely smoked or ingested as bhang lassi, for sacral purposes. Especially the worshippers of Lord Shiva (the destroyer of the ego), and amongst them more so the ascetics, smoke charas as a form of worship of their god and to be close to him. One variant of the Shiva mythology, related to me by Hindu ascetics, states that Shiva conjured up the world into existence when sitting in the jungle, smoking charas. We humans then are his stoned dreams and phantasies, and smoking charas is used to wake up from that dream. Especially this last phrase does not immediately make sense, but maybe it would if smoking charas long enough and in sufficient quantities.
Also in India, pot-smoking Shiva-ascetics become more and more marginalized. The author has witnessed scenes where ascetics, although officially seen as a hoary adjunct to Hindu culture, were beaten up by the police, and driven away from town centres, where their mingling with foreigners was seen by the authorities as disturbing.
